The Post Graduate Department of Bioinformatics was established in 2009 under the prestigious Shri Shivaji Education Society, Amravati with the vision of promoting interdisciplinary education and research at the interface of biological sciences and computational technology. The department stands as one of the few multidisciplinary Bioinformatics departments in Maharashtra and the only one of its kind in the Vidarbha region.
The department is progressing under the dynamic coordinatorship of Dr. Ganesh B. Hedawoo (Department of Botany), whose leadership has significantly contributed to academic growth, research development, and student achievements.

Academic Programme

The department offers a Postgraduate Programme in Bioinformatics with an intake capacity of 20 students. Graduates from Life Sciences backgrounds are eligible for admission, including:

• Other B.Sc. Life Science disciplines

The department provides advanced academic and computational infrastructure to support teaching, research, and practical training:

• Two dedicated Computer Laboratories with 24-student capacity each
• Smart Boards and Smart Screens for interactive learning
• Dedicated Dell Server for bioinformatics analysis, practical training, and project work
• Well-equipped computational facilities supporting research and data analysis

Research and Academic Excellence

Several alumni are working in international research environments in countries such as the USA, Ireland, and France. Some students have been awarded the prestigious DST-INSPIRE Fellowship, while others have established independent IT enterprises and startups.
The department maintains a placement ratio exceeding 40%, reflecting the dedication of students and the continuous mentoring provided by skilled and inspiring faculty members.

Industry Exposure and Collaborations

To enhance employability and practical exposure, the department has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with academic and industrial partners. Students regularly undertake internships in major scientific and IT hubs including Pune, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Nagpur, Indore, and Bangalore.
