The Department of Languages at Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati, established in 1958, has a proud legacy of excellence. The department is committed to deliver the curriculum aligned with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University’s (SGBAU) prescribed courses. The faculty members teach essential subjects such as , Ability Enhancement Course (AEC), four Generic Open Elective Courses (GOEC), Indian Knowledge System (IKS), Value Education Course (VEC), and Marathi in Modern Indian Languages (MIL). Additionally, the department provides dedicated support and guidance to students participating in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The faculty also mentors the students in seminars, presentations, group discussions, interviews, and more. The departmental initiatives include organizing the Bhagavad Gita Knowledge Competitive Examination, Gandhi Thoughts Examination, and other such enriching activities.
The department's guidance has led students to remarkable achievements, that include winning prestigious competitions, such as SGBAU’s Youth Festival and ‘Purushottam Karandak’ . Their consistent success in Essay Writing, Debates, Elocution, Drama, Skit, Mime, and Quiz competitions, along with their outstanding performances in seminars, presentations, and group discussions, showcase the department’s commitment to nurture excellence.
In terms of faculty achievements, one of the department’s distinguished former members, Prof. Khan, has made significant contributions to literary translation, having translated around 16 Marathi books into English. His notable work includes the acclaimed Panipat by Viswas Patil. Prof. Khan's exceptional literary skills have earned him recognition, with several of his translated works being recently long-listed for prestigious awards.
The Head of the department Prof. Dr. Vaishali Deshmukh is a PhD Supervisor and presently guiding two research scholars. She has a remarkable academic record along with a meritorious performance in Post Graduate Certificate Course in Teaching English (PGCTE) and Post Graduate Diploma Course in Teaching English( PGDTE) from English and Foreign Languages University,Hyderabad. She has also completed two NPTEL courses in Elite class. Her achievements include Prof. S Krishnamurty Award for securing first rank in PGDTE, EFLU, Hyderabad and State Level ‘Sahityaratna’ Award. She is a bilingual poet, translator and has to her credit, two anthologies of poems and Robert Green’s best seller ‘Mastery’ translated into Marathi.
Dr. Manish Shrihari Gaikwad has made significant stride in research, securing a grant of Rs. 16 Lakh for his Major Research Project titled "Ethnic Tribal Communities in the Satpuda Mountain Ranges: A Study of Culture and Identity" for the period from March 2024 to March 2026, funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi. He is also a Ph.D. supervisor, guiding research students while excelling academically with accomplishments such as achieving 83% in the NPTEL exam and completing a Post- Graduate Certificate Course in Teaching English (PGCTE) at the English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad.
Dr.Punam V. Barabde, Associate Professor, has completed one Minor Research Project titled ‘The Role of Grammar for the Students Whose Mothertongue is not English’. She has recently been awarded with a Ph.D degree and has published several research papers in reputed Peer-reviewed and UGC listed journals.
The department has always prioritized holistic development of the students. Extra classes are regularly conducted for academically weaker students, particularly those from the Melghat region, where students face significant challenges in learning English. Through the dedicated efforts of the faculty, these students are nurtured towards academic success.
TThe primary mission of the Department is, to instil human values in students while fostering their intellectual curiosity. Additionally, it seeks to enhance students' communication skills—an essential quality in today’s globalized world. By introducing languages, the department equips the students to thrive in today’s world of Information and Technology and helps them to overcome the communication barriers for fulfilling their aspirations.
