Activity Report
The Zoological Excursion was organized by the Department of Zoology, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati for the B.Sc.III students on 20-22 March 2025 to study the techniques of collection, preservation, and identification of fauna at the Zoological Survey of India, Western Regional Center(WRC), During this visit students also participated in a day workshop on Methods in Collection, preservation and identification of fauna which was organized by ZSI, Pune on 21 March 2025. A total of 40 students participated along with 03 teaching and one nonteaching staff in this Zoological excursion and one-day workshop.
During the first session, students visited to ZSI museum and observed the preserved animal specimens from various groups i.e., Insects to mammals.
During the workshop, Dr. Basudev Tripathy, Officer-in-charge, ZSI, Pune, delivered the first talk on the faunal diversity of India and the need for Conservation. Dr. Tripathi explained the various techniques and survey methods used in the faunal biodiversity assessment process.

The second talk was delivered by Dr.K.P.Dinesh, Scientist-E, ZSI on Methods in the Collection, preservation, and identification of Amphibian fauna. Dr. Dinesh also focused on the use of Molecular tools for correct identification and diversity study of Amphibians.
During the second session, the third talk was delivered by Dr.S.S.Talmale, a senior scientist on Methods in the Collection, preservation, and identification of small mammalian fauna. Dr.Talamale has pointed out the unexplored area in mammalian research.
The fourth talk was delivered by Dr.Patil, a senior scientist on Methods in the Collection, preservation, and identification of Spider fauna. Dr.Patil has explained the various modern techniques used in spider study and also he focused on the web pattern of Spiders.
The fifth talk was delivered by Dr.Aparna Kalwate, Scientist-E, ZSI, on Methods in the Collection, preservation, and identification of insect fauna. Dr.Kalwate has explained the collection and preservation techniques for different groups of insects and also given a demonstration on Butterfly and beetle preservation to the students.
During the third session, students visited to Invertebrate and vertebrate specimen collection section and they observed the various groups of preserved and tagged specimens of animals including some rare fauna.
This zoological excursion and workshop at ZSI, Pune provided valuable insights, and students learned the methods of Collection, preservation, and identification of fauna with special reference to Insects, Spiders, Amphibians, Birds, and small mammals. Students also learned about taxidermy techniques and observed the chronologically arranged various animal groups specimens in ZSI, museum.
This tour was successfully conducted by Dr.Jayashree Dhote, Dr.Gajanan Wagh, Dr.Shubhangi Gawande as a Teacher-in-charge and Mr.Mangesh Solanke supporting staff from Dept. Of Zoology, Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati, Maharashtra.
