Introduction: The Department of Chemistry at Shri Shivaji Science College, Amravati, successfully organized a five-day DBT Star College Activity aimed at Teaching Physical Chemistry Experiments and Graphical Analysis Using Computer Software or Computer Simulations. This initiative was designed to provide final-year undergraduate students with hands-on experience in computational chemistry and data analysis.
Objectives:
• To introduce students to modern computer-based tools for conducting and analyzing physical chemistry experiments.
• To enhance students’ ability to represent and interpret experimental data graphically.
• To bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications using simulations.
• To equip students with essential skills in scientific computing and problem-solving.
Activity Schedule and Details
The activity was carried out over five days, covering various aspects of computational chemistry, graphical analysis and draw chemical reactions using chem draw, king draw software. The sessions were structured as follows:
Day 1: Introduction to Computational Chemistry
Overview of scientific software such as ChemDraw, Kingdraw, MATLAB.
Basics of molecular modeling and computational tools.
Day 2: Graphical Representation and Analysis
Hands-on training in plotting experimental data, curve fitting, and error analysis.
Introduction to software-based statistical analysis.
Day 3: Simulation of Physical Chemistry Experiments
Demonstration of thermodynamic processes using simulation tools.
Computational study of reaction kinetics and equilibrium.
Day 4: Spectroscopy and Molecular Structure Analysis
Use of computational techniques to analyze spectroscopic data.
Visualization of molecular structures and chemical bonding.
Day 5: Data Interpretation and Problem-Solving
Group discussions and interactive problem-solving activities.
Application of learned techniques to real-world chemistry problems.
Participants and Feedback
The workshop was attended by 100 B.Sc. III year students from various groups, including PCM, PHG, MEB, and BIO. The students actively participated in the sessions and showed great enthusiasm in learning new digital tools for chemistry. The feedback received highlighted the usefulness of the activity in enhancing their analytical and computational skills.
